Cookie Policy
This policy explains what cookies AvioADSB uses, which ones are strictly necessary, and how you can control them.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser when you visit a website. They are used to remember state between page loads — for example, to keep you logged in.
2. Cookies we use
| Cookie name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
avioadsb_token |
Strictly necessary | Stores a signed JWT that authenticates your session after login. Without this cookie, you cannot access the Dashboard or authenticated API endpoints. | 30 days (or until logout) |
avio_live |
Strictly necessary | A signed pass set when you open the live map, so the map can load aircraft data. Contains only an expiry time and a signature, nothing about you. | 1 hour |
avioadsb_consent (local storage) |
Strictly necessary | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies, so we don't ask on every page. | Until you clear it |
| Live map settings (local storage) | Strictly necessary | Remembers the display choices you make on the live map, such as the base layer, units and filters. Stays in your browser; never sent to us. | Until you clear it |
ph_<project>_posthog (cookie and local storage) |
Analytics — only with your consent | Set by PostHog to recognise you across visits, so we can see how the site is used (pages viewed, clicks, sessions). With your consent PostHog may also record sessions: page changes, clicks and scrolling, with anything you type into forms masked. | 1 year |
That's the complete list. We do not use any advertising or social media cookies.
If you decline analytics cookies, or haven't chosen yet, PostHog runs in cookieless mode: nothing is stored on your device, sessions are not recorded, and page views are counted using a hash of your IP address and browser that changes daily, so we can't recognise you across days.
3. Third-party requests
Fonts, scripts and the API documentation are served from our own domain, not from Google Fonts or a CDN. The only third-party requests your browser makes are for map tiles, from OpenFreeMap (and from OpenStreetMap if you choose that layer on the live map). They set no cookies, but like any web server they see your IP address. The site itself is delivered through Cloudflare (see the list of processors).
4. How to control cookies
The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings (also in the site footer). Withdrawing consent deletes the PostHog cookies from your device.
You can also delete cookies via your browser settings. Deleting avioadsb_token, or clicking Logout in the Dashboard, logs you out.
5. Changes
If we ever introduce additional cookies, we will update this policy and notify logged-in users by email.
